I support everything you say. Your reasons make sense. What can we do to promote this? Are you getting any response/support in caucus. I know some feel like you do. Again, how can any of us help? Is there anything we can do at the convention except speak to the topic? Could there be a booth promoting this?
I am getting discouraged about our finances - it must drive you crazy as well.
Another note, why are we not buying up gold like the Asian, Mid-Eastern and South American countries, to bolster our currency in the coming currency crisis? Take all the production of Canadian companies as there is a shortage, do it for 10 years. I think we only have about 3 tons, sold it all long ago, very stupid thing to do. Use printed money as it will cover the expansion too soon with the rise to come in the price of gold.
Please keep me informed of any general initiative to promote either issue.
A BIG thanks for your sane approach. Wish all representatives were like you.
Thanks. Liz MacKinnon, President, Nepean-Carleton

Good luck with the Budget Freeze, sounds like a reasonable thing to me. When I am in debt and I am spending more than I make, the last thing I want to do is increase spending - that would be irresponsible and would require a sacrifice in the future I might now want to make. Instead, balance my budget and freeze spending, maybe even cut wasteful spending where possible - so easy a caveman can do it!

J'attends votre commentaire.

There is no chance in hell of any of this even coming close to implemented policy. Harper will never reduce spending or the size of government. Harper will never balance a budget. Not in a year, not in 10 years, not ever. Just form your own party already. I think it'll be a lot more fullfilling than being Harper's 'House Libertarian'.

Old white guy; If you read my post you would see that I said was "instead of the current system we go to a consumption tax" Let me try to explain myself...if we went to a consumption tax ONLY and no other taxes the savings to us on income tax would be great. If we only paid a consumption tax on every purchase EXCEPT what is needed to live on, all other purchases would be considered non essential. At that point you have to make a decision, do I really want that item, if yes you buy it and pay the appropriate taxes. The other benefit is that the low information voter will see just how taxes are collected and just may not want to tax the so called rich into non existence.I feel right now that some people have no idea about taxes and how they work, just that they get free stuff and it comes from the government. I am not a rich person but do know the value of a dollar.....Steve O

Anything that reduces the size of both gov't and debt is a good idea. The flat tax is way overdue. I'd vote for Monsieur Bernier as a successor to Mr. Harper. Keep up the good work.

This is definitely a good start to reign in spending and try and get our fiscal house in order. I think that their are 2 other areas that should be looked at. Once we have achieved a balanced budget, the government should strive to pay down the national debt as quickly as possible and reduce the number of waste full programs which we cannot afford or need. The other area is taxes;instead of the current system of a progressive tax or flat tax (which can & will be constantly adjusted) the you should be looking at a consumption tax. This would be the most fair and equitable taxing system and ALL CANADIANS would be paying into it. Just my thoughts....Steve O

Was at the conference, your comments are refreshing, does the government have an outsourcing to small business target? 50%? okay that was a joke, but seriously there is nothing the government is doing that they cannot outsource to small business that are not saddled with public sector benefits and pensions. This will be a boom for the economy, and perhaps spark the creation of several small consulting companies that can also compete and win contracts abroad, thereby increasing exports abroad. Back to my question, each department should outsource a minimum of 20% of existing functions. Whatever happened to Consulting & Audit Canada? please bring them back and give them this 20% mandate.

Cytotoxic and D are liberal trolls(crackpots) perpetuating the myth bought be the unwashed in this country that the CPC is a party of bigots and angry old white men who detest Quebec. Nothing could be further from the truth as we are the progressive force in this country most of whom do not belong to any particluar constituency like say state employees.
The CBC and MSM is doing the heavy lifting for Trudeau, and so please relay to Minister Moore who has a love affair with the CBC that we are tired of them posturing for the liberal party and socialist ideals, as we fund their $1 billion annual tab. I am maxxed out on this type of taxation and can barely afford to give to the United Way anymore.

Maxime:
Great speech and thoughtful content in your speech at Carleton U.
As you can respect and as seen in the former comments it is difficult to get concert on every issue you raise. What some bloggers here are remiss in is their political history. Canada and particulalry the provincial and muncipal governments for the most part are all largely statist and left leaning and it is impossible to eradicate that mindset for about 60% of the population who are entitled to their entitlements. I like your thesis on less regulation, lower corporate tax rates and a smaller beaurocracy. I am unsure of your premise that fee trade is a harbinger for greater economic prosperity, as free trade is hard to enforce and can be breached easily in jurisdictions like say Thailand or Colombia. Korea does extremely well without any free trade agreements.
My pet peeve on government grants or subsidies is that there is no oversight or accountabilty as beaurocrats are incapable of saying no to most grant schemes whatever their validity. They always play the nice guy and would rather be in the coofee shop then argue about questionable expenditures and accounting peractices. You know this from your experience as Minister of Industry and the TPC legacy which you inherited from Manley the guy who was on the Board of Directors as Norrtel went from 150 billion to 0. Keep up your good work and maintain your enthusiasm for free enterprise as our country needs your mindset more then ever.
